Sonja, who was from Utrecht, had previously hidden at several other addresses which had all become unsafe. She was able to remain in the van Hoeks' home until the end of the war. Pieter was employed by a rayon-producing plant in Arnhem and was active in the Resistance. Margaretha (Margo) was an American-born woman living in Holland. Her parents also lived in Arnhem and they too were active in the Resistance. Margo's father was interned in the Vught concentration camp in Holland because he was caught helping Jews. He was later released and he returned to Arnhem. On October 22, 1944, during the RAF bombardment of Arnhem, the van Hoeks' home was destroyed and the family moved in with friends who lived on the same street as Margo's parents, outside the cordoned-off area of the city. At the end of March 1945 the van Hoeks moved to nearby Velp. After a few days the city was liberated, on April 16. Almost one month later, when the whole of the country was liberated, Sonja's parents, who had been hiding in Utrecht, came to pick her up. The two families maintained close relations thereafter. On November 13, 1995, Yad Vashem recognized Pieter Cornelis van Hoek and his wife, Margaretha Philippina Ionia van Hoek-Ham, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
