The brothers had been forced to flee from their previous hideout and had spent the last few months hiding in the forest near Glanerbrug. The van Elburgs warmly welcomed the boys into their home and treated them like members of the family. Frederik and Geesjen were a great source of moral support and allowed David and Max to live with them until the end of the war. They acted out of purely humanitarian motives and received no payment for their efforts. On December 11, 1973, Yad Vashem recognized Frederik Wilhelm van Elburg and his wife, Geesjen van Elburg-Kuipers, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
