He was not afraid to speak out against their plan to sterilize Jews and refused to give medical examinations to young men going to work in Germany. In addition, he helped distribute illegal newspapers and was the representative of the illegal medical association in Limburg, Medish Contact, which opposed German control of medical practice and ethics in Holland. On August 25, 1944, Karel was arrested and sent to the Vught concentration camp, where he was executed on September 5. His wife, Leonora, and their daughter, Charlotte van Berckel (later de Habicht*), were also active in the Resistance movement. They were involved in helping Jews across the border to Belgium. Among others, they saved the lives of Dr. Belinfante of The Hague by helping him cross the border and hid eight-year-old Ronny de Pauw in their home for a few weeks in 1942. On October 8, 1980, Yad Vashem recognized Karel C. van Berckel and his wife, Eleonora van Berckel, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
