When, in the fall of 1943, they were asked by the underground to take in Salomon Mozes Rosenberg, a one-and-a-half-year-old boy from Amsterdam, the Berbens, who had no children, agreed. Johannes was a construction worker, but was often unemployed, and Theodora was a housewife, and they did not have much money. They told the neighbors that the child had come from the big city, which was suffering from a terrible famine. They received support from the LO and the NSF in the way of food and clothing coupons. Later the Germans took over their house and they lived in the cellar, but they kept the little boy at great risk to themselves and with no financial compensation. When Baarlo was liberated on November 21, 1944, it became clear that the little boys parents had been murdered in Sobibor.Salomon remained with the Berbens and they raised him as their son. On June 7, 1990, Yad Vashem recognized Johannes Cornelis Berben and his wife, Theodora Aldegonde Petronella Hubertina Berben-Peeters, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
