They met Wilhelmina Bakker and her five adult children through a friend. The family agreed to give the couple a room in their house on the outskirts of the town of Halfweg, North Holland. The presence of the couple was concealed as well as possible from neighbors and acquaintances. In the room that had been set aside for them, one of the sons prepared a very secure hiding place. The couple paid a reasonable sum for their stay and the entire Bakker family looked after them for over six months. Only when the danger had subsided did the couple leave the house, in March 1943. During the war, the sons were involved in underground activities of various sorts. Mr. Coini, who was forced to leave another hiding place later on, was welcomed into the home of one of the sons, Gerardus Bakker*, and his wife, Wilhelmina Joanna Maria, and stayed there until the liberation. On January 28, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Wilhelmina Bakker-Bies and her children Catharina Maria Elisabeth Bakker, Antonius Johannes Cornelis Bakker, Johannes Jacobus Maria Bakker, and Andreas Jacobus Jozef Bakker as Righteous Among the Nations. |
