Rescue Story
Bakker, Dirk & Neeltje Scherrewitz)
On January 12, 1943, Sara Streim gave birth to a girl. Only two and a half months later Sara and her husband Isaak decided to go into hiding and sought a shelter for their baby daughter. Marcelis Beerling* put the Streims in contact with Dirk and Neeltje Bakker, in Oostzaan, North Holland. Dirk and Neeltje opened their home and hearts to the baby without expecting any reward. They took care of the child when she fell ill with polio and continued to do so even after their own 16-year-old son contracted the same disease.
On May 24, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Dirk Bakker and his wife, Neeltje Bakker-Scherrewitz, as Righteous Among the Nations.
