Age and Henny were members of the anti-Nazi underground in their hometown of Bolsward, Friesland. Age helped Jewish adults find hiding places and obtained ration cards for them. Henny helped hide Jewish children, saving the lives of 30. Lili Rosalina, a Jewish girl who was then 11 years old, had already been through tough times. She had been arrested twice by the German police and released, and after her parents were sent to Sobibor she wandered from place to place for several months until she found Henny. Lili begged Henny not to send her away. After consulting with her husband Henny took Lili under her wing and treated her like a daughter. They adopted the little girl officially, out of fear of being betrayed. When the Germans broke into their house to search it, Lili hid in the hiding place they had prepared in a cupboard with a double wall until the Germans left. Lili, later Klisser, testified that the Bakkers motives were humantarian, without any thought of recognition for their acts. Klisser has kept in close touch with the eldest son of her rescuers, who was 23 years old in 1943 and later was minister of transport in the Dutch government from 1976 until 1981. On January 27, 1993, Yad Vashem recognized Age Bakker and his wife, Heintje Bakker-Visser, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
