He preferred playing music to helping the Germans and was put into a forced labour camp (Pardowicz, near Prague , Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic)) by the Germans in World War II where he was sentenced to death but reprieved because of his flute playing and put to work on the railways near Nuremberg , Germany , until released by the American forces under General Patten. Since his release he has been a street musician and philosopher in Amsterdam . For 20 years he campaigned for the right to perform in the streets without permits and ultimately won his case in Holland and elsewhere. Playing the flute for movies and writing his memoirs (1987). Lived latterly at Hilversum , Netherlands . |
