Aantekeningen: | Johanna Pigeaud van Gelder, 107, an artist and former Washington resident, died of cardiac arrest June 4 at a medical center in Gwynedd, Pa., where she had lived since 1971. She lived in Washington from 1938 to 1970. During World War II, she worked as a draftsman at the National Bureau of Standards. In subsequent years, she operated an arts and crafts workshop out of her home and produced pottery and watercolor paintings. Mrs. van Gelder, who was the daughter of a Dutch doctor, was born on the island of Java, then part of the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia. She spent part of her youth in the Netherlands and studied architecture at the University of Delft. After immigrating to the United States in 1912, she married Hendrik Enno van Gelder. The couple lived in Westchester County, N.Y., and Salem, Va., before moving to Washington. Her husband died in 1954. Survivors include three children, Henrietta Alderfer of Gwynedd, Frans van Gelder of Trenton, N.J., and Walter van Gelder of San Rafael, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Her son Enno van Gelder died in 1992. |
