Working in an official position, Jef was also notified, or at least knew about, imminent roundups and was thus able to warn the potential victims. He pursued these paths of resistance in a quiet manner without ever advertising his activities and therefore many of his beneficiaries were unaware of the help he gave them until decades after the war. During the war, Jef spent long hours in his office arranging identities for Jewish children hidden in Brunssum and Heerlen from the identities of children who had died. He also carried out other forms of administrative fraud. His friends and neighbors took note of his dedication to work and probably assumed that he was involved in illegal activities, but he was not betrayed until May 1944. At that point, Jef went into hiding with the town priest, Father van der Geest, the leader of the LO in Brunssum. He survived the war and was active in public affairs in Brunssum for many years afterwards. On December 10, 1995, Yad Vashem recognized Joseph Hendriks as Righteous Among the Nations.
