Through his job, Jozef traveled around the country and had many non-Jewish customers. In 1942, through the mediation of one of his customers, Mary and Jozef were introduced to Willem and Annie Huisman of Zutphen. In May 1942, Willem, a supervisor in a metalware factory, and Annie, the parents of two daughters, 15-year-old Annie (later Steemers) and 12-year-old Beppie (later Hage), welcomed the Jewish fugitives into their home. The Huismans turned out to be wonderful hosts. Mary and Jozef remained with them for 32 months and were fed and looked after throughout this time. For a long period, the Franks were able to pay towards their upkeep but when their money ran out they still continued to enjoy the same hospitality, although food was scarce and expensive. In May 1943, when Willem was arrested by the police and charged with inciting his fellow factory workers to strike, he explicitly told his wife to keep the Franks hidden in their home. When he was released from Vught six weeks later, he was pleased to find Jozef and Mary still sheltered there. Shortly before the liberation, when the area around Zutphen became a battleground and bombs were falling close by, the Huismans fled from their home to a relative's cellar, taking the Franks with them. After the war, the Franks moved to Australia but they kept in close touch with the Huismans, writing to Jan and Annie regularly. Even after the deaths of Willem and Annie, Mary and Jozef kept in contact with Annie and Beppie. On October 10, 1996, Yad Vashem recognized Willem Huisman, his wife, Annie Huisman-Ilbrink, and their daughters, Annie Steemers-Huisman and Beppie Hage-Huisman, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
