On April 27, 1944, her husband, the Resistance activist Andries Gitter, was caught and deported to Neuengamme (where he later died). At the time, Mietjes child was two and a half, years old and she was seven months pregnant. Because of her husbands arrest, she decided to leave her home lest the Gestapo come and search it. Not knowing where to go to, Mietje, in a state of desperation, turned to her neighbor Adriana (Adrie) van der Horst-Vrieling, a mother of two whose husband was a prisoner of war in Czechoslovakia. In her testimony to Yad Vashem, Mietje wrote: Spontaneously, Adriana proposed that I come and live with her, to hide and to have my baby in her home. I told her that I was Jewish and that the risks to her and her two young children were too great. She reacted to my comment with a simple answer: It makes absolutely no difference. I want to help you. Adriana, a courageous woman, helped her Jewish neighbor without receiving any payment. On June 10, 1944, Mietje gave birth to her second child, a girl, with the assistance of a nurse and doctor. On September 6, Mietje dared to return to her own apartment. In May 1945, after the liberation, Mietje was able officially to register her daughter, Patricia Marianne, whose birth was illegal and which Adriana had facilitated. On January 14, 1985, Yad Vashem recognized Adriana van der Horst-Vrieling as Righteous Among the Nations. |
