Professor Jelle Hoogland and his wife, Wilhelmina, were part of this group and Alida would go and stay with them in their Hengelo home once a month on her "leave" while working as a mother's helper. Jelle and Wilhelmina had been the first Resistance members in their hometown when the occupation began. After the situation of the Jews worsened, they began collecting money to support various illegal activities. Jelle later became a member of the National Committee of Resistance. A specialist in chemistry, Jelle developed a method of falsifying identity cards by deleting the "J" stamped on them and restoring the cards by using parts of genuine cards that had been stolen. When Jelle had to go into hiding, Wilhelmina warned the ten Zijthoffs that Alida was in danger. She arranged an alternative place for Alida to stay in Lemmer, Friesland. The Hooglands' house was raided and their property confiscated. Wilhelmina and her children were forced to wander from one place to another, but Jelle was never found. Alida later testified that the Hooglands rescued many Jews by providing them with addresses, including Izaak and Juliet Spanjaard and Joop Cohen and his brother. On December 26, 1988, Yad Vashem recognized Jelle Gerrit Hoogland and his wife, Wilhelmina Elisabeth Hoogland-Schaap, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
