Brandt and Pietje had no children of their own and became very attached to the girl, treating her lovingly. They looked after her without any compensation though fully aware of the risks and she remained with them until the liberation in May 1945. Anette testified that after the war she stayed in close touch with the Holwerdas and visited them frequently. On June 13, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Brandt Holwerda and his wife, Pietje Holwerda-Torensma, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
