Arnoldus worked as a supervisor of gas fitters for the local gas company. In this capacity, he met Abraham Schijveschuurder and his wife, Else (née Kahn), in December 1942. The Schijveschuurders were living in Haarlem with their two sons, 19-year-old Joseph (Joop) and 14-year-old Louis. When they met, Abraham discussed with Arnoldus the need for his family to go into hiding, and Arnoldus offered to help. When the Jews of the area were ordered to move to Amsterdam, Joop and Louis went to stay with the Stouten family while their parents went into hiding with Gerard Kornmann*. Arnoldus and Pat kept the presence of the two Jewish boys in their home a secret. Thus, the boys had to remain indoors all the time. Arnoldus and Pat tried to live their lives as usual, despite the precautions they were taking to secure the house and to make it impossible to see in from the street. Joop and Louis were permitted to move around freely indoors. Joop and Louis were kept busy by continuing their education through correspondence, using false names. They were treated well by the Stoutens and financial reward was never an issue. At the end of summer 1943, Joop and Louis moved to another hiding place. On December 2, 1991, Yad Vashem recognized Arnoldus Jacobus Stouten as Righteous Among the Nations. |
