He had been asked to go to the apartment where they lived in Haarlem with their two sons, Joseph, 19, and Louis, 14. Abraham discussed the need to go into hiding with Arnoldus, who told him that he and Pieternella were prepared to help. When the Jews were ordered to move to Amsterdam in February 1943, Joseph and Louis were taken to the Stoutens house, while their parents found shelter with Gerard Kornmann* and his family. The boys presence was kept completely secret and they stayed inside all the time. Pat and Arnoldus tried to continue their lives as normally as possible. They took precautions to ensure that it was difficult to see into the house from the street and Joseph and Louis could therefore move around freely indoors. Once, during a house search in the summer of 1943, they had to creep into the attic above the kitchen and lie completely still for several hours. Joseph and Louis kept busy by continuing their education by correspondence under their false names. Pat and Arnoldus treated them very well and never expected any payment for doing so. At the end of the summer of 1943, the boys joined their parents with the Kornmanns* because of the Stoutens marital problems. On December 2, 1991, Yad Vashem recognized Pieternella Hofmans as Righteous Among the Nations. |
