In 1942, a former school friend, Paul Stibbe, and his wife, Selma de Raay, turned to Edward for help. Edward met with Selma in a field outside Rotterdam. He accompanied her by train to The Hague and then to the city of Utrecht to a hiding place. When the hiding place became unsafe, Edward found them another one in Eindhoven and later, after much wandering, in Sassenheim, South Holland, with bulb growers. At that time Edward got married, and on the day that he and his new wife returned from their honeymoon, they found the Stibbes on their doorstep, asking for shelter. Apart from a few short stays elsewhere, the Stibbes stayed with Edward and Barbara until three months before the liberation, when Edward arranged for them to stay at his physician's office. He found illegal ways to feed them since they had no ration cards. In 1944, during one of the periods when the Stibbes were elsewhere, the Hofs took in M. B. Cohen-Pareira, who was brought by Martha Ottens from Utrecht when the Germans began to suspect Martha and she was forced to flee with her charge. The only place she could think of was the Hofs, who constructed a special hiding place for them. On January 29, 1992, Yad Vashem recognized Edward Hof and his wife, Barbara Hof-Zwaan, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
