He stayed at various addresses for the first year, among them the Hiemstras* of Ternaard and the family of Frans van der Heide*, who lived in the village of Ferwerd, Friesland. In July 1944, he was taken to Sijbe and Klaaske Hoekstra's home in Engwierum in northeast Friesland, under the name Robbie van Zijl. The Hoekstras, a young couple expecting their first child, were very kind to ten-year-old Robert. He lived a normal life in Engwierum, going to school and attending church on Sundays. He stayed with the family until January 1945, when his own parents, who were hidden in a priest's house in nearby Groningen, found him and took him back. The Hoekstras never accepted payment for looking after Robert. Sijbe was deeply involved in Resistance work and a member of the NBS (Nederlandse Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten). He helped with arms drops and hid guns and ammunition in his home. It was only after the war that Robert realized that he often slept next to a large pile of guns hidden under the floor of his bedroom. On January 12, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Sijbe Hoekstra and his wife, Klaaske Hoekstra-Zuidema, as Righteous Among the Nations.
