The Hoekstras, who had no children and were motivated by humanitarian feelings and a love of liberty, invited Jews and non-Jews to sit at their dinner table without ever asking for ration cards or money. On October 21, 1943, Jan and Sijke were warned that one of their contacts had betrayed them and the Germans were on their way to raid the farm. They immediately moved all their guests to other addresses but stayed on the farm themselves to prove that they had nothing to hide. Jan was brutally interrogated for three hours, but neither he nor Sijke talked. After the Germans left, Jan dragged his battered body through meadows and ditches to Mr. Koonstra, a farmer who took him in a small boat to his brother-in-law, where Doctor de Groot examined him. He had severely contused ribs and a broken shoulder and his hearing was also damaged, resulting in permanent partial deafness. When Jan was more or less recovered, he continued his illegal activities, without further German interference. However, his confidence in mankind had been seriously shaken and he never shook off vague feeling of being threatened. On October 18, 1998, Yad Vashem recognized Jan Hoekstra and his wife, Sijke Hoekstra-Rozema, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
