The family with whom they were placed treated them so badly that they ran away and went temporarily to their niece and her husband, the Stuivers, Jews who were also active members of the underground. The Stuivers found a hiding place for Max with Theodorus and Antje van der Hoek. Although Max only stayed with them from February 1945 until the liberation, it was the most difficult period of the entire war because there was no food and people were starving. However, Theodorus and Antje shared their last morsels with Max, treating him extremely well. On September 21, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Theodorus van der Hoek and his wife, Antje van der Hoek-van Velsen, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
