Five-year-old Doris was separated from her parents, but all three were found hiding places by the same Resistance activist, Jo Vis*. Some of the other Rresistance members that helped them were Greta Driessen*, Pieter Tjeertjes*, and Marinus Hille. Marinus (Rinus) was a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDAP) and a close friend of Jo Vis. He was very supportive during the 14 months, from June 1943 until August 1944, in which Helen and her husband hid in Haarlem. Marinus lived in Zaandam, North Holland, and came every two weeks to bring news from the outside world, reading material, and food rations cards. After Jo Vis was arrested by the SD in November 1943 and deported to Dachau, Marinus looked after Helen and her husband until they were found by the Germans, arrested, and deported to Auschwitz in August 1944, and he continued to look after Doris, motivated by anti-Nazi sentiments. Helen survived the war and remembers Marinus as a self-educated, sincere, and sensitive person. After the war, Marinus became the alderman of Zaandam and mayor of Wormerveer, North Holland. On May 3, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Marinus Jacobus Hille as Righteous Among the Nations. |
