Frank and Trijntje Hieminga were living in Heilo, North Holland, when the war broke out. They had six children under six years old. Even though Frank only earned a modest income, he and his wife decided that it was imperative that they save Jews and other people being persecuted by the Germans. Their deep religious sentiments and their love of the People of the Book served as the basis of the resistance to Nazi antisemitism. From May 1943 until the end of the war, they hid Alexander and Johanna Schouten of Amsterdam in their home. The Hiemingas protected their charges wholeheartedly and prayed fervently for their safety. In doing so, they saved the lives of the Jewish couple. The Hiemingas were extremely reticent about their work in the Resistance, which extended well beyond hiding Jews in their home. They considered it their duty to act and never found it necessary to talk about their activities. The Hiemingas never accepted any financial remuneration from the Schoutens; they preferred to finance the fugitives' needs from their own funds.
On December 1, 1970, Yad Vashem recognized Frank Hieminga and his wife, Trijntje Hieminga-Wolzak, as Righteous Among the Nations.
