The family contacted an illegal aid organization that put them in touch with the Resistance group connected with Trouw in Baarn, North Holland. After they had hidden at several addresses, the group took them, on January 31, 1943, to the home of Henricus (Henk) and Catrina Hibbel, where they remained until the end of the war. At first, only Levi and his wife were hidden with the Hibbels but when Henk heard that their daughter was hidden nearby, he brought her into the refuge of his home too. The Hibbels were a working class couple with four children under the age of eight. Henk worked as a bakers deliveryman, a mailman, and an agent for womens magazines. By working in three jobs, he managed to make a modest living. Catrina was a slightly built woman who was often ill. Initially, Levi paid 28 guilders a week towards their upkeep, but his money ran out after a year. From then on, the Trouw group supported them. The two families shared equally whatever food and heating materials were available. The Hibbels built a space under the floor that could be used as a hiding place during house searches. The Worms used it on several occasions, and each time they did, the Hibbels risked their own lives to protect them. On March 1, 1990, Yad Vashem recognized Henricus Jacobus Hibbel and his wife, Catrina Hibbel-Willemsen, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
