Still befor the war, the Heydenrijks were friends with Annies in-laws and had taken the initiative in approaching the Haas family and offering assistance. Jochem and Elisabeth were motivated by their religious and humanitarian principles, and helped Annie despite being surrounded by Nazi collaborators. The Heydenrijks gave Annie a comfortable room, her own bed, food, and fuel to heat the room. Annie paid 40 guilders a month towards her upkeep. When her money ran out, the Heydenrijks still kept her in hiding under the same conditions. The family developed a warm relationship with Annie; Elisabeth even baked cakes to take to Annies in-laws and husband. During the war, Annies husbands brother, Benno Haas, hid with the Heydenrijks for six months. Elisabeth and Jochem ran an office from their home and their son Jochem (Joke) was a member of the Resistance. On October 14, 1944, the Germans arrested Joke because of his involvement in the Resistance. Annie had to leave the house and went to a nearby hiding place. As she was leaving the premises, the Germans arrived at the front door to carry out a search. Joke was shot dead by the Germans the day after his arrest. On May 8, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Jochem Gerard Heydenrijk, his wife, Elisabeth Heydenrijk-Rozeboom, and their son, Jochem Gerard Heydenrijk, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
