There, they settled in Eindhoven and had two children, Joost, born in 1934, and Manfred, born in 1938. Mr. Oppenheim met Jacobus Heuvelmans in October 1942, when they were both hospitalized in Eindhoven. Jacobus, a devout Catholic, offered to hide the Oppenheim children and their father accepted the proposal. From December 5, 1942, until October 4, 1944, Joost and Manfred stayed with Jacobus and Wilhelmina Heuvelmans and their six children in Reusel, North Brabant, under the names of Jan and Kees Blijdorp and using the story that they were orphans from Rotterdam. The Heuvelmans couple, who owned a bakery and a restaurant in Reusel, allowed the two fugitive children a great amount of freedom of movement. Mr. and Mrs. Oppenheim, who were hiding in Eindhoven, paid a nominal sum toward the upkeep of their children. However, even after they were betrayed and deported and the money stopped coming, the Heuvelmanses continued to afford Joost and Manfred the same hospitality. Mr. Oppenheim died in Auschwitz. His wife, Laura, survived Theresienstadt and reclaimed her children after the war. In 1946, the family moved to the United States but they remained in close contact with the Heuvelmans family. On March 31, 1981, Yad Vashem recognized Jacobus Heuvelmans and his wife, Wilhelmina Heuvelmans-van Elderen, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
