Woortman had extensive Jewish contacts and managed to persuade a large number of Jewish parents to trust him and his associates with their children. The majority of these children were found accommodation in south Limburg by the NV* group of which Joop was a member. Joop put around 15 Jewish children into Leen Heuteniks care and Leen accompanied them to Friesland by boat. In Lemmer, Leen handed the children over to a stranger with identifying credentials who took them to a safe house. Even after Leens wife gave birth to their first child, he continued these trips until the seaway was closed. One day, they were stopped for inspection near Urk, Overijssel. Leen ordered the two boys he was escorting to disappear and fled into the hold. Each of these trips entailed spending a few days in Friesland since the Lemmer boat did not sail back the same day. Later, he found a better address in St. Nicolaasga, staying with the Nota and Leenstra families. In contrast to Amsterdam, there was plenty of food available in the area. In February 1945, shortly after the birth of his second child, Leen made his last trip with the Lemmer boat, escorting a Jewish girl. The situation in Amsterdam had become too hazardous and so he went into hiding with the Leenstras and stayed with them until the liberation. On May 22, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Leendert Gerardus Johannes Heutenik as Righteous Among the Nations. |
