Nicolaas (Nico) and Maria (Ietje) Hessel of Bunschoten, Utrecht, had relatives in nearby Baarn who rented out an apartment to some young Jewish men from Amsterdam in 1942. When the Germans arrested one of the tenants, the others were compelled to find a hideout elsewhere and were directed to the Hessels, a young, childless couple. In July 1942, 26-year-old Simon Weening, one of the men, asked the Hessels for shelter and was immediately welcomed into their home. In May 1943, Gerzon Kreveld, a friend of Weening, joined him there. The two men lived with the Hessels until the end of the war, in 1945. During this time, the Hessels had two children. By sheltering these two Jews, the Hessels endangered their lives, and their relatives constantly reminded them of this fact. Some members of their family even threatened to report the Jews to the Gestapo in an effort to save the hospitable couple. However, Nico and Ietje refused to turn in their wards, saying that if God had sent the two young men to them He must have intended for them to save the fugitives. The Hessels were motivated by their humanitarian and religious beliefs. When the money that the men were contributing towards their upkeep ran out, the Hessels did not change their attitude. In the latter part of the war, the Hessels made contact with the LO, which provided food coupons for the fugitives, but this was not a significant factor in the Hessels' decision to continue sheltering and supporting the Jews.
On January 5, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Nicolaas Marinus Johannes Hessel and his wife, Maria Sophia Hessel-Osinga, as Righteous Among the Nations.
