In the spring of 1943, he and his parents were forced to move into the Jewish quarter of Amsterdam and on August 2, 1943, when Barends mother was in the final month of another pregnancy, they were arrested and taken to the Hollandsche Schouwburg. Barend was placed in the crèche opposite, the assembly point for children. With the help of Walter Süskind, he was taken from the crèche to a safe house in Limburg on September 13. After a few months, he was moved by a member of the NV * group to the Hendrikses, who lived in Echt, Limburg, and it was here with Peter and Elisabeth Hendriks that he spent most of the remainder of the war. Peter worked for the Germans in a slaughterhouse and thus his family was never short of food. He and Elisabeth had one child and wanted to look after another. Barend was introduced to everyone as the child of Elisabeths sister, who was seriously ill. Barend got on very well with his foster parents and trusted them enough to tell Peter his real name, which he had been cautioned never to do. In August 1944, the Siegfried line, the German front, was approaching and the inhabitants of Echt were evacuated to nearby Roermond. The Hendriks were evacuated several times, each time taking Barend with them, until the winter of 1944, when they left him with Elisabeths sister, Truus Helwegen-Smeets, in Roermond. In March 1945, Roermond was liberated and Barend was reunited with his parents, who had survived in hiding with the Hoekstras*. After the war, Peter and Elisabeth admitted that they had not considered all the risks of hiding a Jewish child, but, after all that had befallen the Jews, they were happy that they had been able to help save one. On March 1, 1990, Yad Vashem recognized Peter Hubert Hendriks and his wife, Elisabeth Hendriks-Smeets, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
