Mulder, an active Resistance worker, brought Trees Slager, born on May 3, 1935, to the home of Geertuidinus and Sjoerdje Hamming in Wageningen, Gelderland. As with all of Trees's previous hosts, the Hammings hid the Jewish girl without receiving any financial compensation. They told everyone that the young girl was a refugee from Rotterdam and that her name was Treesje Bakker, but they still risked arrest should her real identity be discovered. In September 1944, the Hamming family had to flee to nearby Putten because they were being sought for illegal activities. In Putten, the Hammings and Trees found shelter with farmers and they stayed there until the end of the war. On July 13, 1972, Yad Vashem recognized Geertuidinus Hamming and his wife, Sjoerdje Hamming-Hoeksema, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
