Delinus Visser’s* family initially hid Ellen Karpowitz, who was born in Berlin and had lived with her family in The Hague. However, it became too dangerous for her to remain there and so she had to be relocated. Geertruide van der Haar (Trui), who worked in the Visser household and had a daughter about Ellen’s age, agreed to shelter Ellen in her home, though she knew her husband would oppose the idea. Ellen then spent more than a year on the van der Haars’ small farm in Soest, Utrecht. Ellen felt very safe with Trui and her daughter, Corrie. Trui took care of her when she was sick, provided a teacher for her on a weekly basis, and shared the limited supply of food with her. Trui also had to defend Ellen’s presence before the members of her family who did not want her in their home. Towards the end of the war, the van der Haar family was compelled to accommodate Germans on their farm. This intrusion, coupled with the continued reluctance of some members of the family to help Ellen, forced Trui to transfer her to another address. Trui was sad to send Ellen away from her home, but fortunately Trui’s mother, who lived in the city of Utrecht, was willing to shelter her. Ellen stayed with her until the liberation. Even after the war, Ellen maintained a close relationship with Trui.
On January 22, 1992, Yad Vashem recognized Geertruide van der Haar as Righteous Among the Nations.
