In May 1941, Wiebregt met Bernard on the street and a new relationship developed between them. Bernard was married and had a daughter. His in-laws and his father-in-laws brothers family, the Haarpuders, had illegally emigrated from Germany and wished to establish a business. Wiebregt agreed to act as a front for the enterprise thereby enabling the entrepreneurs to make a good living. Although Wiebregt was offered a share in the profits, he refused to accept any payment. When the German persecution of the Jews intensified from mid-1942, Wiebregt realized that he was endangering his life by helping the Haarpuders. Nevertheless, he refused to let his friends down and he now offered them a place to hide. Initially, he hid Bernards wife in his own home. Then Bernard was arrested and released in a roundup on July 14, 1942. After this incident, Bernard and his family moved into a small, abandoned and dilapidated apartment in Amsterdam, to which Wiebregt regularly brought food and other provisions. The Haarpuders also found hiding places, but Bernards in-laws were betrayed and perished, while the brother, Adolph, survived. In 1983, Wiebregt Hellinga was awarded the Dutch Resistance Commemorative Cross for his heroic actions. On January 20, 1987, Yad Vashem recognized Wiebregt Marinus Hellinga as Righteous Among the Nations. |
