In March 1944, Herman and Petronella Hellenbrand of Heerlen, Limburg, welcomed the de Leeuw family into their home and the miner's family of three and the Jewish family lived together on pooled funds. In June 1944, the Hellenbrands were betrayed to the Germans and consequently Arend, Mientje, and Herman were all arrested, on the 22nd of the month. The de Leeuws were deported to Westerbork and then Theresienstadt; Herman was taken to the Maastricht prison. On the way to Maastricht, Herman told the Security Police that he wished to help the Jews. In reply, he was told that he would therefore share their fate. From Maastricht, he was taken to Vught concentration camp, Sachsenhausen, Oranienburg-Neuengamme, Braunsweig-Wasserstadt, and Ravensbrück. Herman survived the camps and returned home on May 23, 1945, a broken man weighing 80 lbs. partially blind and suffering from loss of equilibrium. While Herman had been in prison and the camps, Petronella had remained at home with Elisabeth; her own daughter was killed in a road accident. Elisabeth was deemed to be Petronella's daughter but, for safety' sake, at one point she had to leave Petronella and relocate to another hideout, where she survived the war. During the war, the Hellenbrands considered it their duty to save persecuted Jews. They had hidden other Jews in their home prior to the arrival of the de Leeuws. On June 18, 1972, Yad Vashem recognized Herman Mathieu Jozef Hubert Hellenbrand and his wife, Petronella Hellenbrand-Couvee, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
