He had been a close friend of Henriƫtte van Frank-van Thijn and her husband, Benjamin, before they went into hiding and he had left them a telephone number in case they needed to contact him. They did so when Henriƫtte became pregnant in 1943, and although he himself was in a difficult situation Marinus managed to arrange for her to deliver the baby under an assumed name, Miss van Daren, in the Catholic Maria Stichting Hospital in Haarlem. Klara van Frank was born on June 18, also under an assumed name, Johanna de Wit. Dr. Heering had also arranged for Gertrud and Willem Vader* to take care of the baby. They took her when she was a week old and looked after her until after the war, saving her life, with Marinus acting as her guardian. On January 17, 1990, Yad Vashem recognized Dr. Marinus Heering as Righteous Among the Nations. |
