The Heemskerk family from Rijnsburg, South Holland, had a house full of children. When Judith Ruth de Zoete needed a safe haven from the Germans after her hideout with Alida Wouters* in Wassenaar became unsafe, she was brought to the Heemskerk family who said: Where there are so many children, one more does not matter. Thus, Judith became the eighth child. As the war continued, the situation became increasingly difficult. It was especially hard to obtain food for so many people. The ration cards did not allow for enough food to keep the children from getting hungry and so additional food was bought on the black market. Despite the danger Pryna and her family were never deterred from treating Judith like their own child. They fed her well and nursed her when she fell ill with pneumonia. Despite the dangers involved, Judith remained with the Heemskerks until the end of the war.
In 1964 Judith Ruth's father turned to Yad Vashem and asked that the rescuers of his family, including the rescuer of his daughter, to be recognized. On October 13, 1964, Yad Vashem recognized Pyrna Heemskerk as Righteous Among the Nations.
Cornelis Heemskerk was also recognized, but his recognition was reversed in 2016.
