In February 1943, the Jewish van Dam family narrowly escaped a round up on their street in a Jewish area in southern Amsterdam. Van Dam turned immediately to his family physician, Dr. Phiedeldy Dop*, who had a large number of Jewish patients, and who was heavily involved with the local student underground group ASG. He was given the address of the van Heeks, who lived not far away in the ‘Aryan’ part of the city. Van Dam had worked in the van Heek textile business and knew the family. However, getting to their home meant that German controls had to be passed. Without hesitation, Dr. Phiedeldy Dop took the four-year old Helene van Dam through the controls, stating that the girl had a contagious disease and was to be taken into quarantine.
Frederik van Heek was a professor at the local university and Johanna was at home caring for the children. The van Heeks, both in their thirties, had three children, the oldest born in 1937. A fourth was born during the war. One of their children had the same age as Helene, and for the outside world, she was instantly declared a “twin sister”, to the extent that the van Heeks also dressed them identically. Frederik’s mother and the household help were told that Helene was a girl born out of wedlock by an earlier household employee. Helene stayed in and around the house most of the time, and was not allowed to go to school, as she had no valid papers. Even though she had much to amuse her at home with the other children, she missed her parents quite a bit. They all went on vacation to Frederik’s mother in the countryside until travel was no longer possible after September 1944. Helene stayed with the van Heeks until the liberation of the city in May 1945.
Helene’s parents were in hiding in another part of the city where they, as well as her brother Jacques, survived.
After the war Helene stayed in touch with the van Heeks as well as with Dr. Phiedeldy Dop, who was a witness at her wedding.
On December 21, 2009, Yad Vashem recognized Frederik van Heek and Johanna Catharina Michiela van Heek-van Marle as Righteous Among the Nations.
