In August 1942, he treated Jette Levi. (Her daughter was engaged to Curt Gutsmuth and they were all being hidden by the van der Hoeven* family.) Johannes diagnosed her for an eye infection and wanted her hospitalized. This was awkward because of the harsh persecution of the Jews. He took Jette to a hospital and made sure that the nurses would keep the secret of the patients being Jewish and would not let her have any visitors. (Until this time, Johannes Haring had treated his Jewish patients for free and had even provided them with medication at no charge.) While the Jews of Amersfoort were being rounded up, Jette stayed in the hospital and her fate was therefore changed. At the same time, Johannes also provided Jettes daughter Nelly with a document stating that her mother was in the hospital, and this exempted her from deportation. Jette survived the war and lived to the age of 87. During the war, Bertha Gutsmuth, Curt's mother, was also hidden in Amersfoort, under the auspices of Mies Gomperts* and Piet Brandsen*. Johannes Haring examined her and discovered that her diabetes had worsened and that she urgently needed butter, meat, eggs, and cheese. As a Jew, she did not have access to these items. Thus, Johannes prescribed all these foods for Gezina van der Hoeven, who was hiding Curt Gutsmuth. For the following two years, Gezina van der Hoeven queued for hours each month with other very sick people in order to collect the prescription for Bertha. In this way, Berthas life was saved. On October 22, 1980, Yad Vashem recognized Dr. Johannes Pieter Haring as Righteous Among the Nations. |
