Thus, in 1943, the newlyweds decided to go into hiding. They initially hid in Amsterdam, but, in February 1944, when their hiding place became unsafe, they were transferred to the de Koning* family in Rijnsburg, South Holland. After the (clandestine) birth of their first child Rosa in June of that year, the de Konings' home became unsafe. Guus de Koning found an alternative hideout for the family with Cornelis and Clasina (Clasien) Haasnoot*. The Haasnoots were a childless couple who welcomed the family warmly into their home. They provided food for their "guests," even during the bitter winter, and also gave up their bedroom for the fugitive family (as the de Konings had done before them). Moses offered to pay 30 guilders a week to his hosts, but when he had no money left the Haasnoots' hospitality was still willingly extended. Moses, Rachel, and their baby remained with Cornelis and Clasien until the liberation in May 1945. The de Konings and the Haasnoots were devout Calvinists, and their faith was a contributing factor to their firm resistance to the Nazis. Along with the other citizens of Rijnsburg, their religion sustained them in times of hardship and danger. On March 28, 1990, Yad Vashem recognized Cornelis Haasnoot and his wife, Clasina Haasnoot-van Egmond, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
