Gerardus and Anna Groot, who brought them food, helped them throughout this period. When they could no longer stay in this hiding place, Gerardus, despite the danger, brought Israel and Esther back to his hometown of nearby Beverwijk and they hid in his house. Anna and Gerardus had five children and were foster parents to another two non-Jewish children who had been malnourished, which meant that from June 1944 onwards, there were 11 people living in their small house. Despite the risk to their own and their children’s lives, Anna and Gerardus would travel, sometimes for a whole day, to acaquire food for the household and for other Jewish people in hiding whom they looked after. They were never paid and never asked for any money. Israel and Esther stayed with the Groots until several months after the liberation in May 1945 and were then reunited with their son Michiel, who surfaced after the war in Wijchen, Gelderland. On November 10, 1975, Yad Vashem recognized Gerardus Groot and his wife, Anna Groot-Pepping, as Righteous Among the Nations.
