The second time, they went to stay with Jan and Janna Groot Obbink and their two adult children, Gerritjen (later Bieleman) and Gerrit, in their big farmhouse in Eibergen, Gelderland. It was Gerritjen who took care of the two young refugees, but the whole family treated them warmly and they moved freely around the house. Jan, Janna, and their children considered it their moral duty to rescue those being persecuted, and they did not receive any payment. On April 8, 1986, Yad Vashem recognized Jan Groot Obbink, his wife, Janna Groot Obbink-Boom, and their son, Gerrit Jan Groot Obbink, and their daughter, Anna Gerritjen Bieleman-Groot Obbink, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
