Aantekeningen: | Last Name: Griffioen First Name: Jacobus Alias: KO Rescuer's fate: survived Nationality: THE NETHERLANDS Gender: Male Place during the war: Baambrugge, Utrecht, The Netherlands Rescue Place: Baambrugge, Utrecht, The Netherlands Rescue mode: Hiding File number: File from the Collection of the Righteous Among the Nations Department (M.31.2/1315) One dark night, Wilhelmina van Hilten* took four-year-old Elleke Meijers (later Elly Rubin) by bicycle to the home of Jacobus and Wijntje Griffioen in Baambrugge, Utrecht. Ellekes father was a good friend and a colleague of Wilhelminas husband, Jan, who had offered to find shelter for the entire Meijers family. It had been difficult to place young Elleke because she was dark and would have stood out in a family of blonde children, but Jacobus (Ko) and Wijntje were willing to take the risk of having questions asked. It soon became apparent that it was simply too dangerous to hide someone in the Griffioens home because it was situated near a major highway. Thus, after six months there, Elleke was relocated to the home of Wijntjes sister and her husband, Cor and Jan van der Lee*, who lived in a safer place across the river. Elleke stayed with them until the end of the war. On February 15, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Jacobus Griffioen and his wife, Wijntje Griffioen-Ridder, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
