The brothers were warmly welcomed and after awhile, their parents joined them there. Antje Grandia, a teacher, often gave Philip and Leon lessons in their home. Antje was trusted because she had been hiding a Jew, Leo Hartveld, in her home since July 1942. In the spring of 1944, a series of local razzias forced the Peper family to seek a safer address. Philip and Leon turned to Antje and her husband, Johannes, and she warmly welcomed them into her home. She also found a new hiding place for Leo, where he stayed until October 1944, when it became too dangerous and he moved back to the Grandias. During their time with the Grandias, Philip and Leon were introduced as two cousins from Rotterdam, temporarily based in Amersfoort in order to attend a special school. Antje and Johannes shared everything they had with their guests. By March 1945, however, food had become so scarce that they were unable to feed everyone. Consequently, Philip and Leon were transferred to the Ingeborg boarding school, headed by Mrs. Muller-Kuhlenthal*, where they remained until the liberation in May 1945. Antje and Johannes never received financial compensation for their efforts. They were fully aware that they were endangering their lives by sheltering Jewish children, but they felt compelled to act out of a sense of duty. After the war, Philip and Leon stayed in touch with Antje and Johannes. On March 19, 1985, Yad Vashem recognized Johannes Hendrikus Nicolaas Grandia and his wife, Antje Grandia-Buijs, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
