Her work meant that she was exempt from deportation until the spring of 1943. Her parents, meanwhile, were deported to Auschwitz were they were murdered in the gas chambers. A Jewish couple, active in the underground, offered to find Flora a hiding place when her exemption expired. On May 1, 1943, a woman took Flora by train to the Goossens family, who lived on a farm in the village of Liessel, North Brabant. Frans and Theodora (Dora) Goossens had seven children, aged one to nine. Despite the fact that they were very poor, they refused to take any money from Flora, who worked on the farm and around the house. She lived under an assumed identity, but had to be taken elsewhere when there were German soldiers in the area. She remained with the Goossenses until the area was liberated in October 1944. Frans and Dora also sheltered other Jewish refugees, who were hidden in a large dugout in the farmyard, which was equipped with basic facilities. Most of these fugitives stayed only until a more permanent address could be found. Two of them, however, stayed for a longer period of time: Mel Granaat and Lou, two young men whom Dora supplied with food every evening. On November 2, 1994, Yad Vashem recognized Frans Goossens and his wife, Theodora Goossens-Verbakel, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
