Suddenly, two-year-old Trudy was snatched from her mother's arms by Levi's brother, Wim, who took the girl by bicycle to her grandparents' home. With the help of the Resistance, a more permanent hiding place was soon found for Trudy (later Jeger) with Hendrik and Antje Glasbergen in Rijnsburg, South Holland. A minister from Oegstgeest, South Holland, brought the infant to the Calvinist Glasbergens, who lived with their two daughters on a large farm with stables. For four years, Hendrik and Antje nurtured and protected Trudy, an act that they regarded as their duty to mankind. The neighbors were told that the girl was an orphan from Rotterdam. The dangers were considerable, not least because the Germans took over the stables and were in and out of the premises every day. At one point, several Resistance workers were arrested during a raid on Rijnsburg and the Glasbergens had to hide for six weeks in Zoetermeer. On another occasion, Antje's sister in Voorburg took in Trudy for several weeks. The Glasbergens were deeply attached to Trudy and were distraught when they had to return her to the girl's aunt in 1946. The Glasbergens subsequently kept in regular touch with their foster daughter. On March 18, 1996, Yad Vashem recognized Hendrik Glasbergen and Antje Glasbergen-Korpelshoek as Righteous Among the Nations. |
