By this time, there were frequent street raids and it was too dangerous for Henri to stay there any longer. Consequently, he contacted people he knew in the Resistance with the aim of finding a hideout for his family. His 14-year-old daughter, Josefine (Jos; later Serphos), was taken to Cecile Hanedoes* in Huizen, North Holland, where her uncle, Karel Poons, was also being hidden. Cecile later escorted Jos to Catherina Wijnker-de Git and her family in Alkmaar, North Holland. Driven by her conviction that people in need should be helped, Catharina hid the girl despite the risks she was taking. Catharina never asked for payment. In July 1944, Jos went into hiding with her parents, who had found shelter with the Ronde* family in Amsterdam. They stayed there together until the end of the war. On May 24, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Catharina Wijnker-de Git as Righteous Among the Nations. |
