However, when in December of that year the search for Jews intensified, the van den Horsts could not hide Henri and Belia too. Consequently they were sent to Aaltje (Alie) and Leo Ginsel of Nootdorp (South Holland). Before the war, Henri and Leo had been colleagues at Utrecht University, and when Leo heard that Henri and his wife needed a place to hide, he welcomed them into his home. Leo and his family felt they had a duty to help people who were running for their lives, despite being fully aware of the dangers involved. Henri and Belia remained in the warm environment of the GinselsÂ’ home until the end of the war. On September 21, 1976, Yad Vashem recognized Dr. Leo Adriaan Ginsel and his wife, Altje Hendrika Ginsel-van Overhagen, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
