Arie and Johanna were actively involved in saving the lives of Jews. When it became too dangerous for Jews to remain in the public eye, Arie offered Mr. and Mrs. van Straten and their son a hiding place. Using his employer's truck, Arie transported them to a safe house. While the van Stratens were in hiding there, he provided them with food and also acted as a messenger between them and their family in Amsterdam. From time to time, Arie suspected that the hideout was unsafe and would take the van Stratens, as well as Mrs. van Straten's sister-in-law, Mrs. de Wolf, and her daughter, who were hiding at the same address, to other temporary shelters. He would transport the fugitives in laundry baskets. After awhile, the principal hideout became too unsafe. In stages, Arie escorted the refugees to his own home. First he brought in the van Straten's son, Samuel, in May 1943. Next he brought in Mrs. de Wolf and her baby at the beginning of 1944. Finally, in January 1945, Mr. and Mrs. van Straten arrived at the Gaarenstrooms' home. They all remained hidden there until the end of the war. The Gaarenstrooms also temporarily hid several other families during the course of the war. Their illegal activities put their lives, and the lives of their children, in persistent danger. On January 16, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Arie Johannes Cornelis Gaarenstroom and his wife, Johanna Maria Petronella Gaarenstroom-Berlips, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
