In the summer of 1942, with the onset of the deportations of the Dutch Jews to ‘work in the East’, the Slager family, parents and three daughters from Amsterdam, decided to look for hiding places instead. Henriette Dina Slager, born in 1926, found a place in the village of Moerkapelle, (prov. South-Holland), from where she had to leave at the beginning of 1943. She was taken to the farm of Jan and Catharina Gaalswijk in the village of Wieringerwerf in the north of the province North-Holland. Jetty, as she was now called, helped out in the Gaalswijk household of three, Jan, Catharina and their infant daughter. Later that year, Henriette’s father was also brought into hiding with the Gaalswijks for some months, as he had to leave an earlier address. As Jan had refused to report for forced labor in Germany, he initially hid in his own home as well, but moved elsewhere as the danger of discovery came too close. Later that year, Henriette also had to leave because of possible betrayal and moved back to an earlier address, where she was able to stay until the liberation in May 1945.
After the war, it turned out that Henriette’s mother had been caught on the street and deported to Auschwitz, where she perished. Her father and sisters survived.
On November 15, 2009, Yad Vashem recognized Jan Gaalswijk and Catharina Margaretha Gaalswijk-van der Dussen as Righteous Among the Nations.
