In December 1942, after being moved between several hideouts, she was taken to the home of Johan and Johanna Friedericy, a childless couple from Velp, Gelderland. Johan was a high school teacher. He and his wife hid Klara despite all the risks and for no financial reward. The situation was especially precarious ---here were regular searches and raids for Jews in the area. Thus, for use in emergencies, Johan constructed an underground hiding place for Klara to disappear into if necessary. While hiding at the Friedericys, Klara fell ill. A trustworthy doctor, Dr. Portheine, came to see her on several occasions. For the duration of her illness, her hosts nursed her lovingly and treated her like their own child. In autumn 1944, during the Battle of Arnhem, many refugees moved to Velp to find shelter. This caused a severe shortage of food during the last winter of the war and it also increased the number of possible informers in the area. During this winter, Johanna crossed the IJssel River on several occasions in search of milk and food. The food he acquired was shared equally with Klara. On May 3, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Johan Christian Friedericy and his wife, Johanna Friedericy-Spoor, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
