From late September 1941 on, Philip tried to organize hideouts for as many Jewish children as possible. Initially, he made discreet inquiries himself about finding safe houses, but, in August 1942, he made contact with Piet van Doorn, who assisted Philip in his efforts. Piet van Doorn was an alias for Piet Meerburg*, who had recently established the Amsterdam Student Group* (ASG). Meerburg was delighted to become acquainted with the pediatrician because Philip was a person sufficiently trusted by the Jewish community to enable him to convince a large number of families that the only way to save their children was through the ASG. Philip went about his work with great dedication. Until far into 1944, he delivered between 100 and 200 Jewish children to the ASG. Philip always used the same method: he talked to the childs parents and, after getting their consent, one of Piets workers fetched the child and escorted him to a hideout. In times of emergency, however, Philip acted independently. In September 1943, Philip hastened to the CIZ because it was about to be shut down. Four-year-old Georgine van Voolen was one of the potential victims. Philip arrived there just before the police and smuggled the girl out of the hospital and took her to Sneek, Friesland. Once there, Georgine, who had tuberculosis, was secretly hospitalized in the Catholic St. Anthonius hospital, where she remained until the end of the war. Georgines mother survived Auschwitz and the two were reunited in June 1945. On April 29, 1976, Yad Vashem recognized Philip Hendrik Fiedeldij Dop as Righteous Among the Nations. |
