Willy, the fiancée of Theo Faes, Jr., lived with her mother and sister and ran a private kindergarten in the downstairs part of the house. She spread the story that Gerhard's father was a prisoner of war in Germany and that his mother had suffered a nervous breakdown. About once a month, Gerhard was taken to visit "Aunt" Jo and "Uncle" Harry de Roos*, where his parents were being hidden. "Thus, we could watch him play and speak through a crack in the sliding doors," Abraham van de Rhoer wrote in his testimony to Yad Vashem. "Both Willy Klaasen and Theo Faes never failed to give Gerhard all their love and care," he continued. "We could never imagine a more ideal set of foster parents." On May 8, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Theodorus Maria Faes and his wife, Wilhelmina Geertruida Hendrika Gezina Faes-Klaasen, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
